What happened to sea urchins in the Caribbean?

Gabriella Gerbasi October 22, 2022

Did you know Diadema previously experienced a massive die-off throughout the Caribbean in the early 1980s?

A waterborne pathogen beginning near the Atlantic Panama Canal entrance caused history's largest recorded marine animal die-off, wiping out 95-99% of Diadema antillarum populations throughout the Caribbean.

June is Ocean Month

Gabriella Gerbasi June 14, 2022

June is Ocean Month. It’s time to shift from thinking of the ocean as a victim to seeing it as an essential part of solving global challenges. We do not have to choose between ocean protection and production. We can have both for a healthy, prosperous future.

Happy World Oceans Day

Gabriella Gerbasi June 14, 2022

On #WorldOceansDay, people around our blue planet 🌍 celebrate and honor the ocean, which connects us all.

The theme this year is Revitalisation: Collective Action for the Ocean, drives home the message that we need to combine forces across the ocean community—and beyond—in order to revitalise ocean health and restore (and protect) vital marine habitats.

valerie taylor, diver, spearfishing woman and shark conservationist. Playing with Sharks

Discovering Valerie Taylor - A Living Legend and Pioneer in Underwater Filmmaking and Shark Research.

Gabriella Gerbasi February 28, 2022

My new hero! ‘‘Playing with Sharks’’ on the life of Valerie Taylor, a living legend and true pioneer in both underwater filmmaking and shark research.

I learned that most of the great environmentalists and conservationists, they all started with hunting. Because they are the only ones who were out, involved in these things, seeing firsthand the impact of what we do out of the water on marine life. Divers, surfers, fisherman and hunters are some of the best ocean advocates I’ve ever met. We want to protect what we love and share it with the rest of the world.

Valerie set the standard by being the first glamorous female to go out and have these dangerous adventures. She was a revelation to me. She was strong and she led the way.

Protect the World’s Ocean, Waves and Beaches with Hydro Flask

Gabriella Gerbasi July 15, 2021

It’s estimated by 2050, there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight so if you’re still looking for ways to reduce your use of single-use plastic this #PlasticFreeJuly, switching to a reusable bottle is a great way to start. Single-use plastic bottles are the third largest ocean trash item so start to #RefillForGood and ditch the plastic water bottles!

Gabriella Gerbasi January 25, 2021

Did you know that coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate ?

Coral reefs are the rainforests of the oceans, providing a home for a dazzling array of life. Reef-building corals are the trees that form the foundation of the ecosystem.

Coral reefs play a vital role in sustaining the health of our oceans and our economy.

Even if you live far from coral reefs, you can have an impact on reef health and conservation.

Bahamas Adventures - Caribbean Reef Sharks

Gabriella Gerbasi November 30, 2020

When I first started diving, I never thought I would ever jump in the water on purpose to swim with sharks. A few year later, here I am observing and diving with sharks in the ocean. I discovered that they are not only fascinating creatures, their symbolism also really resonated with me.

Why we can’t fight climate change without healthy oceans

Gabriella Gerbasi June 22, 2020

Many of us are motivated to protect the oceans because we care about whales, turtles, dolphins and other wildlife – and of course that’s a good enough reason by itself – but knowing how much the oceans do to keep our climate stable makes this work we’re doing together even more important.

As someone deeply connected to the ocean, World Wildlife Day has special meaning for me. Over the last few years, I’ve been fortunate enough to have some of the most incredible encounters with marine animals—humpback whales breaching in the distance, manta rays gracefully gliding past me, sharks weaving through coral, and vibrant ecosystems teeming with life. Each of these experiences has strengthened my connection to the ocean and deepened my commitment to protecting the creatures that call it home.

Honeymoon Adventures in Fiji and Christmas in Australia
Jan 2, 2025

Our honeymoon in Fiji was nothing short of incredible. We flew halfway across the world for the elusive dogtooth tuna, but what we found was so much more than we imagined. Pristine waters, vibrant coral reefs, and an ocean full of life both above and below the surface. We dove Rainbow Reef and saw some of the most beautiful reefs I’ve ever experienced—so much life on the bommies, it was a truly magical underwater world. 🐠

Make Waves: The Importance of Coastal Cleanup on International Coastal Cleanup Day
Sep 21, 2024

Beach clean-ups are essential for preserving our oceans and protecting marine life, but it’s important to remember that sustainability is a journey we can all embark on, no matter how imperfectly. We often think that to make a difference, we must achieve perfection, but the reality is that many people taking small, imperfect actions can collectively lead to significant change.
